Is Drug and Alcohol Rehab Flexible?

Drug and alcohol addiction appears differently in every person which means there is no one treatment approach. Media depictions of drug and alcohol rehab has made many people assume that all programs require intensive inpatient treatment. However, there are more flexible options for individuals with more mild addictions or who cannot take an extended leave from their lives to enter residential addiction treatment.

Flexible drug and alcohol rehab options are available through outpatient treatment. There are a variety of outpatient programs that will allow you to live at home or a sober living facility for the duration of the program. Some individuals in certain outpatient treatment programs continue going to work or school full time during their recovery program as well.  They can take care of home obligations and dependents such as young children, elderly, disabled loved ones, and even pets without having to make long-term arrangements for them. Outpatient programs help remove many barriers people face when getting professional help for drug and alcohol addiction.

Outpatient drug and alcohol rehab provides many of the same therapies and services as inpatient treatment and may be just as effective as residential rehab if it is the right fit. Flexible drug and alcohol rehab is best suited for those with mild addictions, are highly motivated in their recovery, have a supportive home environment, and do not have access to drugs or alcohol at home. Outpatient programs are also used as a step down from inpatient treatment to help individuals reintegrate easily back into their day to day lives. Individuals can continue working on their recovery with enough support and feedback as they begin to live life in the real world. Often, people will spend a short period of time in inpatient treatment to gain a solid foundation and then transition to an outpatient program, so they do not need to put their lives on hold for several months.

Part of a flexible addiction treatment also involves the treatment plans and therapies themselves. Individualized addiction treatment provides the best chance at long-term recovery by addressing all the unique issues each person faces with addiction. Rehab centers in Los Angeles will offer a variety of addiction treatments and services to build each client a personalized treatment plan. Clients will also play an active role in their treatment plans along with clinicians. They are also able to adjust their treatment intensity and choose treatment therapies that work best for them as they progress.

Recovery is a process that lasts a lifetime.

Outpatient Drug and Alcohol Rehab in Los Angeles

Outpatient drug and alcohol rehab in Los Angeles is a non-residential, therapy-based treatment. With outpatient programs, you can live at home or a sober living facility throughout the program and are not shut out from the outside world completely. Participants will be required to travel to the treatment facility several days a week for an outpatient program that will provide access to many of the same therapies and services as inpatient treatment.  This includes individual therapy, group therapy, relapse prevention planning, and sometimes even holistic therapies. There are several levels of intensity in outpatient treatment including partial hospitalization program (PHP) and intensive outpatient program (IOP).

While inpatient treatment may offer the most intensive form of treatment and may be the best place for some people to start, it is not every person’s best choice. Outpatient rehab can offer several options including:

  • Continue going to work or school at the same time. Some outpatient rehab programs can be scheduled around school or work obligations which can allow you to continue going full time.
  • Access to support from loved ones. Inpatient treatment will separate you from all outside world contact, even for a short period of time. Some people would benefit more from going home to loved ones who support their recovery efforts.
  • Take care of home obligations. Outpatient care allows you to continue taking care of small children, elderly parents or grandparents, disabled loved ones, or even pets. Often, individuals find it difficult to enter rehab because they need long-term arrangements for loved ones they take care of.
  • Less expensive. Without the need of room or board, outpatient rehab costs are greatly reduced and may be more accessible for those on a limited budget who are paying out of pocket.
  • Actively apply lessons from drug rehab. Some people learn better when they apply lessons as they go, whereas inpatient treatment does not really allow a real world experience as you learn coping skills and tools.
  • Smooth transition back to the real world. When used as a step down from inpatient treatment, outpatient care can allow individuals to ease their way back to day to day life. Going directly from inpatient treatment back to the real world can be overwhelming and result in an early relapse.

IOP in Los Angeles

Intensive outpatient programs, or IOPs, are the most flexible form of outpatient treatment. IOPs allow for individuals to schedule their addiction treatments around their home, work, or school obligations including early mornings, evenings, or on the weekends. Typically, IOPs require about 10 to 12 hours of treatment per week. Individuals will live at home or a sober living facility and travel to the drug and alcohol rehab center in Los Angeles 3 to 5 days a week for about 3 hours of treatment. Participating in outside 12 step programs and meetings is also highly encouraged. IOPs include a higher level of care than general outpatient programs because they are more structured.

PHP in Los Angeles

Partial hospitalization programs, or PHPs, offer a more intensive form of addiction treatment. They are considered a hybrid between outpatient and inpatient treatment. Programs will typically require participants to travel to the rehab facility 5 to 7 days a week for a full day of treatment and then go home or to a sober living facility at the end of the day. On average, PHPs will provide 20 hours or more of programming each week. PHPs are a good fit for those with mild to moderate addictions who have a supportive and sober home environment. They are also an excellent step between inpatient treatment and intensive outpatient programs.

Recovery is a process that lasts a lifetime.
